How to Calibrate Your 3D Printer’s Extruder

Calibrating an extruder is an essential step in ensuring that your 3D printer produces accurate and precise prints. It is the first step towards achieving the right amount of material flow out of the nozzle. Extruder calibration helps in resolving issues like filament slipping, clogging, and inconsistent prints, which can hamper the overall performance of your printer.

Step 1: First things first, ensure that the bed is levelled, and the nozzle height is set accurately, as these two are the prerequisites for extruder calibration.

Step 2: Load the filament of your choice and preheat the nozzle to the desired temperature. Typically for PLA, the nozzle temperature must be around 200-210°C.

Step 3: Mark a specific length (say 120mm) on the filament, approximately 100mm away from the extruder’s entrance.

Step 4: Using the control panel, extrude the filament, and observe the amount of filament that gets extruded. The aim is to extrude as close to the marked length as possible. If the extruded amount is less than the marked length, increase the extrusion multiplier. On the other hand, if the extruded length exceeds the marked length, reduce the extrusion multiplier.

Step 5: Once the extruder calibration is done, print a calibration cube and observe its dimensions using calipers. The cube’s sides must be perpendicular and must maintain a consistent dimension throughout.

Sometimes, the extrusion multiplier is challenging to calculate, and in such cases, using an extruder calibration tool can make the process more manageable. Extruder calibration tools help measure the correct amount of filament that gets extruded and automatically adjust the extrusion multiplier.

Remember to calibrate the extruder after changing or upgrading any part related to the extrusion system. Calibration is an essential process that needs to be done periodically for optimized 3D printing.
